LANDSCAPING

Lawn Care: There are three basic requirements to maintain a desirable balance within your lawn.

 1.   Proper Watering:  New lawns: It is very important to water heavily once a day for the first two weeks. In addition, on hot and humid days, you must water 2 to 3 times during the heat of the day to prevent drying out. Normally, 5 to 10 minutes is sufficient to prevent drying out.

Once the sod has knit: Your lawn should be watered enough over the first few months to maintain a healthy growing condition. After the turf is well established, it should be deeply watered at 7 day intervals during a period of no rainfall. NOTE: During long dry spells above 75°, you should water 3 to 5 days per week.

Water lawn until 1" of water has accumulated, such as a pit tin.

Water during daylight hours. Ideal watering times are 6AM to 10AM, and 5PM to 8PM. Late evening watering during hot weather may create fungus problems. Watering during the heat of the day will cause some sunburn.

 2.   Good Mowing Practices:  New lawns: Mow your new lawn approximately 10 days from time of installation or as needed. Do not use a riding mower. Roots should be established at least a quarter-inch in length before the first cutting. If you start to bring the sod off the ground from the suction of your mower, you have tired to soon and should wait a few more days. Mow two inches from the ground and always remove the clippings.

Once your lawn is established: Most grass blends should be mowed to a height of 1¾" to 2". Never cut more than " of the total leaf at any one time. Removal of all clippings is recommended.

3.   Fertilization Program:  New lawns: Your new lawn should be fertilized 30 days after installation, regardless of the month. The fertilizer should be well balanced and applied at a rate of 8 pounds per 1000 sq. ft., as indicated.

Once the sod has knit: Fertilize every 30 days from February through November with 4 to 6 pounds per 1000sq. ft. using a complete balanced fertilizer.

REMEMBER!! Watering after fertilization is critical!! Otherwise, burning will occur. You should water daily for the 3 to 4 days following the fertilization.

Plant Care:  Some important points to remember when caring for your new plants, trees and shrubs.

Never water during the heat of the day - 10:30AM to 5PM.

Getting water on foliage, when the sun is out and  hot, will always cause burning. This burning will kill the tree or plant, sometimes in a matter of days. Short needled trees are especially sensitive to sunburn.

Excessive, as well as insufficient watering, will cause damage. Use common sense depending upon climate and drainage situations.

Plants, trees and shrubs will all grow healthier when fertilized. Again, do no overdo.

Watering after fertilization is critical. . .otherwise death or burning will occur.
